Youth Leadership Academy

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. How many workshops and training sessions are there?

There will be a total of 3 workshops, all held on Saturdays:
Workshop 1 – July 18th
Workshop 2 – August 22th
Workshop 3 – October 10th
Participants are expected to join all workshops physically.

2. Is this programme only for those interested in the corporate sector?

Not at all. While many of our mentors are from the corporate sector, they are also deeply involved in leadership roles in their community. YLA aims to develop future leaders of Malaysia across all fields and sectors. We recognise that there are many ways to create positive change and are committed to helping you work toward achieving your leadership vision, whatever that may be.

3. Do I qualify?

YLA is a diverse and select group of up to 50 of the most talented and driven Malaysian youths.  We welcome all Malaysian full-time students currently studying locally at a university in Malaysia who are enthusiastic about social entrepreneurship to join us. Individuals who have recently graduated (up to 2 years or less) AND are working or running a non-profit organization are welcome to apply too!
We are looking for candidates who have demonstrated strong leadership potential, personal drive, and a passion and energy for making a difference in our community and country. It does not matter what field you are currently studying/studied (law, engineering, accounting, interior design, etc) as we are interested in your leadership potential, strong sense of achievement, and track record of wanting to be a leader and making a change. The age limit is 28 years old.

4. Is there a minimum academic criteria I need to meet?

YLA participants will be selected based on a combination of their personal achievements, leadership experiences, and communication skills in addition to your interest in making an impact to the society.

5. What is the application and screening process like?

The first step is filling up an application, and you can do it right now! Successful applicants will be invited to attend an interview – either in person, via video, or over the phone.

6. What are some tips for crafting a good application?

Pay attention to the “Motivation for joining YLA” section. Take time to reflect on the questions and your experiences, focus on the ‘why’ and ‘how’, not just the ‘what’ and feel free to be your true self! We’re hoping to understand you better as a person, with your unique background and experiences, not to be impressed by how many complicated words you know 😉

7. How much time am I expected to devote to the programme?

This programme comprises three full-day workshops where you will work together with your team to develop and implement your social entrepreneurship idea. To maximise your experience, we require that you fully commit and be present at all 3 workshops.
Throughout the 12 weeks, to fully immerse yourself in the programme, we suggest you allocate ~2-3 hours a week towards realising the success of your project. The more time spent on developing your project and working with your Ambassador, Industry Mentor and McKinsey coach, the more you will be able to fully benefit from the programme. You get what you put in!

8. What is the fee for the programme?

The programme is completely free, but participants will have to bear additional costs of logistics and transportation

9. Who do I contact if I have any additional questions?

If you have any further questions about this programme, drop us a message via our Instagram channel or at yla_my@mckinsey.com.

10. Where will the interviews and events be held?

This year, interviews will be carried out remotely. To ensure the best experience of all our participants, there will be a combination of in-person and virtual workshops/trainings. Our committee will share the details nearer to event date.

11. When will applications close?

Applications will close on 12 May 2026.
